Vandal Pickups started the same way a lot of great guitar obsessions start: with a guitar on the bench, a soldering iron nearby, and the feeling that the sound could hit harder.

We were tired of sounding stock.

Tired of chasing tone through gear that played it too safe. Tired of choosing between output and character. And tired of pickups that got louder only by sacrificing the things we actually loved about the guitar.

So we started experimenting. Changing pickups. Modding guitars. Testing combinations. Comparing magnets, winds, output, feel, clarity and response.

Friends started playing the guitars we had modified and asking the same question: “What pickups are in this?”

BUILT BECAUSE STOCK WASN’T ENOUGH

We didn’t start Vandal because the world needed another pickup company.

We started it because we weren’t hearing exactly what we wanted.

Some traditional pickups sounded incredible but didn’t have enough authority when the amp started working. Other high-output designs hit hard but gave up too much in return - muddy lows, brittle highs, compressed dynamics or a loss of the character that made the guitar interesting in the first place.

We wanted something different: more output without putting a blanket over the amp. More mids without losing definition. Clear highs without the ice pick. More aggression when you dig in, but enough sensitivity to clean up when you back off.

That became the foundation for everything we build.

THE PLAYERS BEHIND THE NOISE

Vandal Pickups is led by Kenny Stumbo, CEO and Chief Designer. Kenny is a guitar player and lifelong gear tinkerer who has spent years modifying guitars in search of better tone. The Vandal approach comes directly from that obsession - playing something, hearing what could be better, opening the guitar back up and trying again.

Not theory. Not a boardroom exercise. A guitar, an amp and a set of ears.

Jackson Johansen, Vandal’s co-founder and Creative Director, brings the perspective of a working musician. As a solo artist and frontman for 74-ODD and Cali Kine, Jackson knows that a pickup has to do more than sound good by itself.

It has to work in a band. It has to hold its shape when the drummer gets loud, the amp starts moving air and the guitar needs to cut through without becoming harsh.

That combination - the builder’s bench and the live player’s ear - is at the center of Vandal.

We respect vintage tone. We just don’t believe it has to remain frozen in time.

The great guitar sounds of the past are our starting point, not our finish line. We want the character, dynamics and musical response that made those sounds legendary, but with the additional punch, stability and authority modern players expect from their rigs.

That means every Vandal design has to answer a few basic questions: Does it respond when you dig in? Does it stay clear when the gain goes up? Can you hear individual notes inside a big chord? Does the guitar clean up when you roll the volume back? Does it make the amp feel more alive?

And most importantly: does it make you want to play another riff?

If the answer isn’t yes, we keep working.

HOW WE BUILD

We use high-quality materials and proven pickup-building techniques, but we don’t follow tradition simply because someone decided decades ago that something was the “right” way to do it.

Tradition matters when it serves the sound. When it doesn’t, we experiment.

Our pickups are designed and engineered in the USA and manufactured in Korea to our specifications. Every design starts with the voice and performance we want from the guitar, followed by prototyping, testing and refinement until it responds the way we think it should.

Our focus stays on the problems guitar players actually hear and feel: more output without muddy lows; clear highs without brittleness; strong mids without losing separation; more punch without flattening dynamics; and vintage character with enough authority for modern amps, pedals and gain levels.

We aren’t interested in building replicas. We’re interested in evolution.

Our take on the classic three-single-coil platform. Progressively hotter from neck to bridge, with rich mids, deep lows and crystal-clear highs. It keeps the articulation and openness players expect from an S-style guitar while giving the instrument more muscle when it matters.

The snap, bite and cutting attitude of a great T-style guitar are still there, but with a bigger backbone when the amp begins to cook. Familiar enough to feel right. Different enough to notice immediately.

We started as guitar players modifying our own instruments because stock wasn’t enough. We kept going because we realized better was possible. And we’re still chasing it.
